cancer treatmentTreatments tested

It is assumed that new medical treatments are not effective until it is proved to be beneficial. In fact, most new drugs produced in research labs have shown that work well in treating cancer in humans. For this reason, doctors focus on the results of clinical studies are conducted carefully. Doctors do not prescribe drugs simply because a drug company claims to be effective. Treatments must be proven in studies that are monitored and reviewed by leading experts in cancer treatment. The success stories of patients, marketing brochures, and testimony is not convincing evidence.

Treatment response

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

treatment responsePeople treated for cancer, must be followed to see how they respond to therapy. The most effective treatment is that healing takes place. Healing was defined as complete remission in which all evidence of cancer disappeared (complete response). The researchers sometimes estimate the cure in terms of percentages of disease-free survival over a period of five or 10 years means that this time the cancer goes away completely and does not recur. In a partial response, the size of one or more tumors to less than half, this response can alleviate symptoms and prolong life, but the cancer growing back. The less effective treatment is one in which there is no response whatsoever.

Cancer vaccines

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

cancer vaccinesWhat are cancer vaccines?

Cancer vaccines are another class of biological therapy being studied at present. Vaccines for infectious diseases such as measles, mumps and tetanus, are given before the disease is contracted. Vaccines are effective because they expose the body’s immune cells to weakened forms of antigens that are present on the surface of the infectious agent. This exposure causes the immune system to produce more plasma cells, which produce antibodies specific for the infectious agent. The immune system also increases the T cells that recognize the infectious agent. These activated immune cells remember the exposure. The next time the agent enters the body, the immune system and is ready to respond and stop the infection.

Tumor And Cancer

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Craniopharyngioma: Another tumor that develops in the region of the pituitary gland near the hypothalamus called craniopharyngioma. These tumors are usually benign, however, are sometimes considered malignant because they can press on or damage the hypothalamus and affect vital functions. These tumors usually occur in children and adolescents.

Germ cell tumors: Germ cell tumors arise from developing sex cells, called germ cells. There are different types of germ cell tumors, including germinomas, embryonal carcinomas, and teratomas choriocarcinomas.

Meningiomas: Meningiomas are very common brain tumors that occur in membranes that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord (the meninges). Meningiomas usually grow slowly and tend to affect more women than men. Most meningiomas are considered benign tumors, however, even benign brain tumors can cause disability and sometimes be life threatening. Malignant meningioma is a rare tumor that grows more quickly than benign meningiomas. Types of malignant meningioma are the anaplastic meningioma, hemangiopericytoma and papillary meningioma. Information Center Brain Cancer

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Brain CancerA new or recurrent brain cancer diagnosis often leads to fear and confusion for patients and their family members. Treatment options that they understand, have access to new and innovative therapies through clinical trials, as well as understanding the role of supportive care and complementary and alternative medicine are essential. Cancer research, genetic testing and prevention are equally relevant to all individuals, especially those related to someone diagnosed with cancer.
Abnormal growth of cells into the brain is called brain tumor. Brain tumors can be malignant (cancerous) or benign (not cancerous).

The suspicion of a brain tumor may first arise from abnormal behavior or other symptoms. Symptoms typically investigated with a series of tests aimed at making a diagnosis. If the diagnosis is a brain tumor, you need more information on the cancer cells to determine the best treatment possible. There are many types of brain tumors that differ with the type of cells that make up the tumor. Also, determine the extent of cancer helps the doctor to know the likelihood that the tumor extends to other brain tissues, a feature that can be termed tumor aggressiveness. (more…)

Breast Cancer: Diet and Lifestyle

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Diet and LifestyleThe breast cancer development can not be attributed to a single factor, there are many factors that influence also our diet and lifestyle.

Breast cancer is an increasingly common disease. We all have a case in our environment, and this frightens us. Fear because we think it is a lottery, we can not do anything about it.

But the truth is that this is no longer the case. There are people who barely know the breast cancer, such as China and Japan. But that’s only when they follow the traditional diet. When they move to the West, or take the Western diet, after two generations the breast cancer rates are equal to those of Westerners. This rules out, for now, the genetic variable.

This has been one of the most important clues that have followed many research teams to try to detect what are the environmental factors, diet, lifestyle, creating fertile ground for the development of breast cancer. Fortunately for us to know more about them gives us the chance to do something, or much, to reduce this risk.
