This is described as a medical mystery: why there is a decrease in the number of tumors in general when it is increasing thyroid cancer?
The diagnosis for this type of cancer that affects the gland in the neck is in fact estimated to steadily increase at a rate of increase of around 6% per year according to an analysis provided by the U.S. National Cancer Institute.
Researchers now know to give an account that is linked to increased technological capabilities of medicine, and in particular to the fact that today we do many more scans to inspect neck pain and conditions of arterial plaque and that this contributes to the discovery even tiny tumors in the thyroid, which once would have remained unnoticed and that in most cases did not express any malign evolution and dangerous to health.
However, this statement is not sufficient to explain the substantial increase in thyroid moods: there must be another, and commitment of its researchers is to discover what are the factors that cause, from 18,000 cases found in United States in 2000 have given way to 37,000 cases last year.
Three factors that researchers are considering:
• Radiation: the researchers believe that exposure to radiation plays an important role, especially if such exposure occurs during childhood. Not know, however, specify whether their suspicion involves radiation increasingly used for medical diagnosis.
• Obesity: Some studies even at the initial stage of research suggest that it might be a factor, since it is also growing rapidly.
• Diet: Some studies suggest that diets low in fruits and vegetables or with iodine levels are too high or too low can affect on the rise in thyroid cancer.
However, there is also a good thing, because according to statistics, 98% of people who have the most common form of cancer survive an average of 5 animals, and mortality rates in general are not increasing.
We must however understand what will happen in the future if growth were to remain constant as it is today.
A strong debate has turned on including the treatment of cancer.
Some doctors and researchers say that very small tumors should not be immediately treated with unnecessary biopsies, radiation and surgery to remove the thyroid gland but rather followed and monitored.
Other doctors are hesitant about how to assess this, because in some cases very small tumors exhibit rapid growth and dissemination which can then become a serious danger, so it is indeed difficult to determine a standard behavior on how to intervene.
