New Drugs for Lung Cancer

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

The design of new drugs against cancer is much like the work of a miniaturist, adjusting pieces able to fit into the tumor cells to block them. A new study published in the journal Nature shows that this knowledge of the cell can lead to the development of a new treatment for lung cancer.

Until now, patients with a tumor of non-small cell lung cancer who are also carriers of a mutation in the EGFR gene benefited from the action of a family of specific drugs: erlotinib and gefitinib. These drugs, called EGFR inhibitors are designed to fill a gap in the tumor cells actually destined for another molecule. By preventing this piece take his place and send signals to divide the cancer, the drugs achieve their mission to halt tumor growth. (more…)

cancer treatmentTreatments tested

It is assumed that new medical treatments are not effective until it is proved to be beneficial. In fact, most new drugs produced in research labs have shown that work well in treating cancer in humans. For this reason, doctors focus on the results of clinical studies are conducted carefully. Doctors do not prescribe drugs simply because a drug company claims to be effective. Treatments must be proven in studies that are monitored and reviewed by leading experts in cancer treatment. What is Radiation Therapy?

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Radiation therapy uses particles similar to those of X-rays, but of higher energy capable of penetrating into the body.

This technique for cancer treatment acts on the tumor, destroying the malignant cells and preventing them from growing and reproducing, but also destroys normal tissues temporarily, so that radiotherapy has side effects. The advantage is that healthy cells have greater capacity for regeneration than cancer, so the body recovers from the damage once it has managed to remove the tumor and treatment is completed.

Radiation therapy can be administered either as monotherapy or as adjunct to surgery or chemotherapy. When the previously radiated area affected by the tumor, its size is reduced further by facilitating the surgeon’s intervention. In the event that received radiation after undergoing surgery, the goal is to destroy cells that have been left after excision.
